Take the Pledge
What will you do to reduce your carbon footprint and preserve our oceans?
Facts:
- Humans burn fuel, which produces carbon dioxide. Half of the human-made CO2 has been absorbed by the ocean and the rest is trapped in the atmosphere.
- Atmospheric CO2 has increased more than 40%, warming the planet and causing global climate change.
- The oceans have become 30% more acidic since the Industrial Revolution, damaging organisms such as shells and coral.
- Together, these rapid changes are already impacting the ocean, and continuing trends could have disastrous impacts on ocean life and human beings who depend on it.
Large scale and immediate reductions in CO2 emissions are necessary to slow the progression of ocean acidification as well as global climate change.
Change takes commitment from all of us. Think about what you can do to reduce your carbon footprint.
Here are some pledge examples:
"I don't want my children to ask me why my generation didn't do anything about this issue when we could have. I will reduce my carbon footprint by using energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances, eating local food through a CSA, moving to solar panels and an electric car, and advocating for policy action to reduce emissions. "I pledge to help the planet by: Riding my bike to work as much as possible; driving less; voting for clean energy; and talking about ocean acidification to anyone, anytime..."
- Carol Blanchette
"Someone told me that people are more likely to believe information that comes from their friends and acquaintances. I pledge to be a friendly face and use my knowledge to spread the word about environmental issues including ocean acidification to others!"
- Victoria Haller
"The ocean is important to me because it is the place where I work, play, grow and connect with nature. I pledge to bike to work, buy local at the farmers market, and work to spread awareness about ocean acidification."
- Kristi Birney Rieman
